History of Miami
Miami was incorporated in 1896 and soon became a tourist destination. Tourism continues to play a major role in Miami and its main source of income. Because of its unique location near the Caribbean and Latin America, it participates in international trade with those areas.
A hurricane struck the city in 1926, just before the Great Depression. The city rebounded with the famous architectural design of its time– art deco, which is still seen in Miami today. In 1959, Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba and many Cubans fled the country in search of sovereignty in Miami. This is why the Cuban influence is prevalent throughout the city.
